NorthfieldNick
I wanted so much to be selfish and keep Lu here for me, but it hurt more to see her in pain than it does to say goodbye. My dear, sweet Lu, who sat in a shelter for six months waiting for me. Who traveled across the country with me. Who rather impolitely informed every new dog she met that she owned the world. Who forgave so much. Who slowly but surely wheedled her way into the heart of the man I love. Oh, Lu, I'm so sorry I couldn't fix you this time. Despite my misgivings, it was actually cathartic to dig a hole yesterday. Time to think, to remember all the good things. To remember Lu the way I want to remember her: running with Nick on the beach, curled up in my chair, tearing around the back field with the other dogs. Nick stayed with me while I dug, with a look that said he'd do his best to fill the empty space in my life. Goodnight, Lu. I think I might miss you forever. Lu's spot for watching the kitchen for escaped crumbs. In the truck, after a beach trip. Two wet, smelly, but happy dogs.

nancy
Fergie and I are so sorry. It's so tough. A friend from church died this week. She had cancer that had metastasized to all her organs. She had told her husband that she didn't mind death; she didn't want pain. Luckily, that's what she got. You did what you needed to do. Not just now, but all along.

sluj
I'm sorry your time with Lu was so short, Ben, but I'm sure Lu knew more love in those five short years than many dogs do in the ten or fifteen they are allotted.
bc friend
Godspeed Lu. Ben, I'm so sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter how long we have them, we're never ready to let them go - except when we see pain in those sweet eyes. May your memories bring you comfort in the future. Though you're time together was short, it's clear that Lu was well loved and I'll bet there are many good memories.

KrisK
Lu will always be with you Ben...her spirit can't die. Run free Lu, you are in the company of so many good dogs who have gone before you - you won't be lonely while you wait at the bridge. "There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who chose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings or walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive;our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given." BustopherJones
As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played, I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade. I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity. I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side Were meadows rich and beautiful - lush and green and wide; And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be. My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do. I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright, That this place is truly wonderful; then a bright glow pierced the night. Twas the glow of many candles, shining bright and strong and bold; And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold. For although we may not be together in the way we used to be We are still connected by a cord no one can see. So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart. -Author Unknown Via con Dios, Lu.
