  1. I know a bunch of you have seen this on facebook already, but it's kind of fun dog vision simulator: http://www.wolframalpha.com/widgets/gallery/view.jsp?id=125a6a47bc73b0269276cd2dd58d84f1
  2. My girl has been getting a lot of "ear-itations" (sorry) lately. There's some red-brown gunk accumulated that I removed using cotton pads with a little oil on them. I've had to do this 3 or 4 times in the past couple of months, but it doesn't seem to have come back after the last cleaning. I assumed it was from swimming, and maybe the subsequent scratching. Wondering now, after the thread with the anal glands.
  3. I live in a small apartment, and yes, the XL plastic airline crate takes up a lot of room, but my dog likes it and hangs out quite a bit there of her own accord (door open). I shut her in there for the ocassional time-out, but also for when work is being done around the place. As a renter, I have little to no control over when that will happen, and the handyman/plummer/construction workers don't deserve having a dog harassing them while they work (the electrician, on the other hand... )
  4. Here's the forum thread where the rescue was initiated, if you're interested: http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893 edit: it's a very long thread - 46 pages, you know how things get - and the actual rescue occurs around page 17 or 18. http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893&start=204#p440131 edit edit: here's where the owner chimes in: http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893&start=252#p440312 edit edit edit (sorry): more pictures http://14ers.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=36893&start=372#p440514
  5. This is the local company that clears brush on the hills for fire prevention: http://www.goatsrus.com/dogs.htm . They use electronet to contain the goats, and move them with dogs.
  6. I'm in - haven't decided if I'll make the drive up there again, but would like to help out.
  7. I puzzled over this for a few minutes - chickens swim? Buddy herds chickens? Time for that second cup of coffee!
  8. here's a cool video slideshow of the changing GSD: maybe googling some of the names would get you usable still shots? googling "historic German shepherd" and "historic basset hound" got a few hits http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&rlz=1C1AFAB_enUS440&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbnid=Q5pJjEPJBTdN6M:&imgrefurl=http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v485/Pietoro/Dog%2520Breed%2520Historical%2520Pictures/%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3D1891_BassetHound.jpg%26currenttag%3Dbasset%2520hound&docid=yz8a8DQuiNNsMM&itg=1&imgurl=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/Pietoro/Dog%252520Breed%252520Historical%252520Pictures/1891_BassetHound.jpg&w=469&h=334&ei=OnAPT8SWLMKniALjmuzrAQ&zoom=1 http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&rlz=1C1AFAB_enUS440&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbnid=eZ9uYcDX4ag3gM:&imgrefurl=http://retrieverman.wordpress.com/2011/01/15/the-outcross-that-saved-the-basset-hound/&docid=R4_bMc72SxoYUM&imgurl=http://retrieverman.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/rawdon-lee-bassets.jpg&w=750&h=445&ei=WXAPT5H2MaTjiALkypDSDQ&zoom=1 http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&rlz=1C1AFAB_enUS440&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=JPRi40TEBbwGbM:&imgrefurl=http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html%3Fid%3D1208&docid=C9eed1gdXDWQiM&imgurl=http://cdn.pedigreedatabase.com/pictures/1208.jpg&w=449&h=365&ei=MG8PT8q8K9HUiALCvNHGDQ&zoom=1 ETA: might be worth looking up Rin Tin Tin as well, what with the renewed interest there should be lots available.
  9. Hattrick looks familiar - hasn't ChristineR posted a picture of him at some point?
  10. Interesting way to construct an argument:
  11. Laura - you have to press them pretty hard to engage the switch - you won't turn them on/off by accident. Personally I haven't found them to last very long after dips in water, but splashing or rain seems to be ok.
  12. can you take her out, but only on leash, and only for five minutes, unless she does potty?
  13. I've yet to figure out what the "friend" feature on here is for, but when I checked the friends page, there were three icons next to each friend, and one of them is remove/add. For some reason, I only have the option to remove two of three listed friends, though.
  14. That's a really nice one of Dave. Could be a shampoo commercial.
  15. Pia never posts here anymore , so: http://justmoredogs.blogspot.com/2010/11/how-they-love-plastic-bag.html
  16. Let's not forget; the study *was* done on Beagles. I agree with this though I suspect the optimal time interval will vary by dog and breed. Lynn - I'm sure Duncan'll miss having you to show off to!
  17. I have a similar situation: six foot wooden fence, so I leave my door open and let my dog hang out in the garden while I work inside. Like CindyfromRiley, I have no fear of my dog being stolen - though there is the possibility of someone trying, losing a hand and then suing. There are also the urban legends reported incidents of dogs being poisoned by tainted meat, or shot by police. There are so many awful things that could happen, but I guess you have to weigh that against the likelihood that it would, and benefits of letting your dog have the use of your yard.
  18. Yes, but virtually everyone at a dog trial is a dog owner, which is not typically the case for a public street or bar. I'd certainly be worried about people harassing those dogs, even with her keeping an eye on them from inside the bar.
  19. Our university's mascot is the bear - we have statues of them all over the place, including a standing taxidermy one (6'+) in the window of the student union. Most of them have gotten at least one growl from Allie
  20. Yikes - he's only a state away. LM, please ship him to Paula before I do anything rash.
  21. My Mom bought it for me from one of the vendors at the Finals. I don't know which one, but I can ask. (She said they were doing brisk business; some of their customers were 2 or 3 dogs overdue for one.)
  22. Check San Joaquin Valley Border Collie Association, Northern California Working Sheepdog Association and Redwood Empire Sheepdog Association. Suzy Applegate and Anne Mock are in Plymouth, the Spencers are in Elk Grove, and Bill Berhow is in Zamora. I'm sure are quite a few more I don't know of. Good luck!
