I am so sorry for your loss, Donna. Tikki looks lovely in that picture, and I hope that, with time, you can remember him as he was then.

I hope you and Brighid can comfort each other at this tough time.

ETA: Because I didn't know Tikki's story, I went back and found it. I am so impressed that your willingness to seek alternative care extended his time and improved his comfort. In fact, I noticed "his" post with the pictures of his feet was made exactly two years ago today.

((hugs)) - my eyes teared up when I saw the topic header in the list of new posts just now. I remember your fight to get him healthy and how he defied the odds. He has a solid friend and caregiver in you that's for sure!

Have fun at the bridge with your brand new healthy feet and body, Tikki!!

I'm so sorry. I hoped it wasn't your Tikki when I saw the topic. As usual I've no idea what to say, but I'll be thinking of you.

thanks guys xx

people have been so sweet. my driver at work (a shepherd too) told me i could bury him in one of his sheep paddocks if i couldnt afford to have him cremated (i cant, but i'm having it done anyway). then he told me when i'm ready for another my name is on whatever pup i want out of his next litter of working bc's. bless him. his bitch is brighids half sister!

i'm not ready for another, i dont know if i ever will be, but how sweet of my driver!

i miss him terribly but i have strong feelings of relief too, is that awful of me?

it is so odd not having him with me on walks, but also so nice to be able to go exploring in the woods with the girls without having to scope out a path he can walk comfortably on. there is no path i can take that my boy cant follow me on now bless his heart x

Don't feel bad, Donna, about feeling a sense of relief. I felt that when my Mother died from cancer, that my Dad died a quick death when his time came, and when we've had to put down old animals that just had lost the joy of living and the ability to live a quality life.

Enjoy your new adventures and remember that Tikki is running along down those new paths with you in spirit, since he couldn't do so in life.

Oh Donna, I am so sorry to read about Tikki. My heart fell when I saw that name since he is the only Tikki I've had the pleasure to know.

Tikki was blessed to have had you fighting so hard to make him comfortable. He will live in at the Rainbow bridge with so many other good dogs.

"We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree or an apple or any flowering shrub of the garden is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer or gnawed at a flavorful bone or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder.

These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter. For if the dog be well-remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where the dog sleeps. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppy hood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pastureland, where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to the dog and all one to you, and nothing is gained and nothing is lost .... if memory lives.

But there is one best place to bury a dog. If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call -- come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master"
