nancy in AZ
Anyone here have any first hand experience using dog appeasing pheromone? I just spoke to an acquaintance of mine who claims she can really tell the difference in her severely dog aggressive dog after she started using it. MaggieDog
Maggie laughs at the DAP. I noticed no change in her separation anxiety or aggression when I used it. I hear it's effective in more than half of dogs, but not all. Whole Dog Journal had an article with a bit about it a while ago and they had similar results - works for some, not for others. MaryP
I tried it in my car. My young BC was extremely anxious (i.e., annoying) in the car. I thought DAP might calm him . . . . Nope. I didn't see any change in his behavior. That was $30 wasted. What worked, though, was to make him ride in his kennel. Now, I don't have any problems with him other than the occasional protest whine. Journey
Well, I have one of those it did work on. It helped him get along somewhat better during the nasty Florida thunder storms. Karen
KrisK
It did appear to work with Zachary, my very anxious schnauzer. It's one of those things that's really hard to pinpoint. I'd give it a try.
AK dog doc
FWIW, my expereince is that it DOES work on some dogs but not as well on others, and it also appears to me (anecdotally) that it works better for some issues than others. I didn't have any luck with my nervous dog (Buddy) over fireworks, but it DID seem to settle some of the inter-dog squabbling between him and Pepper - although I'm not sure which dog it was acting on. Was it making Buddy less reactive, Pepper less bossy, or both? No idea. This is just my clinical impression, though. I don't have any numbers to back it up with. My mom swears by the cat version for her cat on furniture clawing... enough so that she ordered a year's supply from me (even though she lives far away; our fee structure was lower than her vet's). She says the cat starts clawing again when she runs out.

diane allen
A vet recently recommended a relatively new product (I think) - a DAP collar. Suggested it for a new pup who was leaving the litter, had a long travel time, etc. Lasts for 4 weeks. I dunno if that's what worked - but this pup was (and is) a GEM! No whining, no anxiety, easy traveler, etc. Maybe he would have been anyway - but it was worth trying! I've also used the spray for my BC mix who gets very anxious when traveling. I can't say that it makes a huge difference - but I think it does help some. I continue to use it "just in case." Who knows how she actually FEELS anyway?! Try it! bskeeter
Hey Karen, I was thinking about getting that some DAP for Callie for the thunderstorms here in Florida. It's pitiful to see a 130lb dog quivering from the thunder that rolls through. Poor old girl. I guess I will give it a try. The other dogs don't have a problem. BTW -- Belle is doing GREAT!!! I have also heard really great things about using an anxiety wrap for thunderphobic dogs. You think about trying that if you don't have any luck with DAP. http://www.anxietywrap.com/
bskeeter
MaryP I haven't heard about the anxiety wrap. What is it and where can I get it? Thanks. Duh, just didn't read far enough in your post to see the link. Thanks again.
MaryP
LOL, I just re-read my post. What a difference a word makes. I didn't mean to say, "You Try This!" I meant to say, "you *might* try this. . . " I don't have personal experience with the anxiety wrap, but I've heard really positive things about it. Like DAP, it may not work for all dogs. But, the dog that I know about was severely thunderphobic and the anxiety wrap pretty much helped him get over it in about a month and a half. She started out by putting the anxiety wrap on the dog and putting him in his kennel when a storm was approaching. Then, they moved to just the kennel without the wrap. Now, they just use the wrap occasionally to "remind" the dog to be calm.
