New puppy - water intake and potty question

Recommended Posts

She could have a urinary tract infection, but my dog drank like a fish when she was a puppy--she just liked to drink a lot of water. Not much help, am I?

BTW, a tiny pup like that will sleep all day and all night with a few very active periods--no need to keep her busy all day long and don't feel bad putting her in the crate for a lot of time during the day. My two spent a lot of time in their crates and I was right there next to them--we played a lot and went out a lot, but I had to work and they had to be somewhere safe while I was doing that. (I work from home).

What a CUTE pup!

Dazzle also drank water like that. I thought she must have been part fish!

When Daz was like that and we asked the vet she said that she was fine after all the test and everything. She just drank a lot of water! :D She also had to go out like crazy or she would explode. That made her so sad too - she didn't want to mess up.

Talk about it with owner - maybe they have already been to the vet about it (although I think that she would have told you)? If not the pup should go just to be sure that everything is okay. It doesn't SOUND like anything to bad - mostly because I went through the same thing and it was nothing. But I would still have test done - I know that it worried me sick before we got Dazzle tested.

Good luck with the pupster! She is really cute! :D

Barring anything medically wrong, my vet told me that sometimes they just drink because they're bored, or just because they can and it's fun...lol.

my pups did that too when they were little. They have chilled out alot on the water drinking since they turned 3 mos old. Guess it isn't so exciting anymore?

I never restricted water for either of my dogs, but sometimes I did have to take the bowl out of their crate if they were splashing in it and playing with it. It was hilarious but VERY messy. I would take the bowl out, refill it, and then after they were calm again I would put it back in. I spent a lot of time doing that until they caught on that the water bowl is not a toy even if it is in their crate. :D

I found with Zoe (who wasn't that young when I got her btw) that any kind of activity set off her bladder. If she was sleeping she was fine, but it didn't matter if she was drinking or not, if she was active she had to GO. Combine the two and I think you're going to have a lot of peeing. LOL I can't comment on the water intake, like I said Zoe wasn't that young... don't remember Oreo..

I noticed mine drank a lot, too (she still drinks about 12 cups per day!). I did a UA & basic workup just to make sure there wasn't anything wrong - it was normal. I talked to the dr's about it one afternoon (I work at a vet clinic) and one of them called A&M and talked to a specialist about it. Apparently, PU/PD (urinating & drinking excessively) can be a obsessive/behavioral issue in some dogs. She said most of the time they grow out of it, but some dogs continue their whole lives. And....here's a surprise - she said BC's are the #1 breed she's been asked this question about  Of course, she still recommended ruling out medical issues, but I didn't realize so many other BC families on this board had the same experience!! Genetics are amazing....
