Journey
Just wondering the lastest status on the research. I thought there was a breakthrough or soon to be announced test.....yet I haven't heard anything about the research on a long time. Any updates? Liz P
I spoke with Dr. Neff at a conference this fall. The gene has been identified, but they need more controls before commercializing a test. IOW, please send in lots of samples! They want to be sure that dogs with 2 copies of the gene go deaf while dogs with 1 or 0 copies don't. This is to avoid false positives and false negatives. Mark Billadeau
I'm waiting for an updated from Dr Neff; he said (email on 12/7) he would provide one soon. I've sent him a reminder.
Journey
Thanks! I had requested the test kit last summer, filled out the on-line form but I never have seen them.
workindogs
I spoke to them by phone (they called me as I have previously contributed to research), agreed to test, ordered kits for a number of dogs and never received anything. Liz P
There was a period of time during which no one got their requested kits. I had to directly contact a research assistant to get them. Maybe it helped that I asked for a very large number so we could get samples from all the dogs at the clinic. I think we went through about 50 swabs.
juliepoudrier
It's a bit strange that they're still apparently calling for samples and then not fulfilling test kit requests. What a way to turn off potential contributors. J.
