misty'smum
Hi Everyone, I have been lurking for a week or so now so thought it was high time I said HI. I have recently brought a BC pup into my family. She is now 13 weeks and we have had her for just over 2 weeks now. This morning we have been to the vet for our second lot of vaccinations and I am eagerly anticipating our first walk next week. My husband was brought up around BCs and wouldn't consider any other breed, for me this is my first dog ever but I know I have made the right choice. I have read so much information both from books and online and while I appriaciate that we will have some difficult times I know that they will all be worth it. Although I have not had dogs before I have been a childminder for the last 6 years and am very used to having energetic toddlers running around the house in to train and guide through their early years and to be honest Misty seems to respond to pretty much the same techniques (with a bit more doggie thinking - lol). My own child is 6 and she has taken very well to Misty and Misty to her, although Misty couldn't seem to resist having a nip around her knees and ankles the first couple of days they have now come to an understanding and we have had no more of that. I will no doubt be on here many times needing advice but I am of the opinion that the better informed I am the better life will be for both Misty and the humans in the househould. So far so good though we are one big happy family. I feel I have probably waffled enough now so bye for now. Vikki PS Pic in my profile, please can someone tell me how to put her as my avatar? KrisK
Welcome to the boards! You will find a wealth of information here. Folks here are willing to share their experiences, good and bad, with their BC's. And...we all LOVE pictures Good luck with Misty! If you look under the 'faq' section on the boards, it will give you the directions for putting Misty in your avatar.
PSmitty
Welcome! I can't wait to see pics of Misty. Have fun with her.
melly
Hi, Misty's Mum, and welcome. Though I don't post very often, I have this board attached at the hip because the of friendliness, forthrightness, and wealth of information. The BC board has helped me through some rough time with my two furbabies. I hope that you enjoy Misty as much as I am enjoying mine.
MaggieDog
Welcome! One thing caught my eye - you said your girl is 13 weeks but has yet to be on a walk - have you been socializing her at your house and/or elsewhere with vaccinated animals and dog saavy people? I ask because so often vets neglect to mention that pups need to be socialized a LOT by 14 weeks of age; the socialization window closes b/n 14 and 16 weeks and after that it's much much harder to work through any fears that come from lack of experience w/ various things. misty'smum
I had my friend bring her dog down but that didn't go that well! Misty was very apprehensive, there were lots of other dogs on the farm where we bought her from but we didn't realise that we could socialise her before she had had her jabs until late last week (doh!!) I am hoping to get her together with my friends calmer lab tomorrow. Hopefully we are not too late
Kat's Dogs
welcome! oooo, pictures! I LOVE pictures! For socialization, just keep doing it forever! You don't ever really need to STOP doing it! Yes, it is BEST to do it early or it is harder - but look at some rescue dogs, some have known notheing but a kennel all their lives and are now out competing in Agility! So don't worry, it is never to late. If you have some questions that you might think have already been asked, try using the "search" tool and look in the FAQs section. That will get you started with a lot of puppy stuff. I can't wait to see pictures!

emmetteabrakai
Welcome to you and Misty. We are all crazy about our dogs. Some of us are more vocal than others. Sounds like you have a winner on your hands in the child husband and dog departments. Welcome again we look forward to having you. Andrea D. misty'smum
Thanks for all the warm welcomes. Ok first question. How can I stop her snapping at me when she doesn't get her own way? I have read that you have to be really careful not to be too harsh but equally (for obvious reasons) she needs to learn very quickly that her teeth are not the answer. So far I am just saying no in a firm voice but am not sure how to reinforce this if she doesn't stop. I am loathe to put her in her crate as she hates it in there at the moment so I want to encourage her that that is a positive place. Look forward to your thoughts Vikki PS HAve just noticed that I now have holes in the bottom of my curtains - looks like my initiation has started! Meg's mum
I had just about forgotten what it was like to have chapped hands and nose from Meg's biting. We started with 'OW!!!!' and turning or walking away for a few mintues. The it become 'Ah, ah, ah' is what we used, and as we taught Meg to have an extremely 'soft' mouth as opposed to 'no bite', it morphed into 'soft, soft, soft'. Most recommend NOT allowing any human biting at all and I agree with them. I had my reasons. One bit of good news, after she is through teething her teeth will be much blunter. misty'smum
Thanks Heidi. Donna, whereabouts in Somerset are you? We camped at Langport last year is that anywhere near you? Have posted an update on our progress. Vikki
donna frankland (uk)
hmmm, langport... is that where ham hill nature reserve and heavens gate rescue center is? (i always get confused between langport and langford!) if so (and i think that is the right way round) then i am about 30 to 40 mins away. i live 1 mile away from the royal bath and west showground if that is any help! near shepton mallet and castle cary. if you are this way again pop round for a cuppa! i make really bad tea unless you like it like gnats pee, i might be able persuade me other half to make it though
misty'smum
I don't drink tea so that would be great. Will let you know if we are travelling that way again.
