blackeyesue
We picked him up Sunday. I was surprised and happy with the breeder. Not sure what I was expecting. Got all his vaccinations on record. Had him to our vet Monday. Everything is good. He's been taking to the house really well. Sleeps through the night. Taking to his crate. Until today, he has been really easy. But it's only been 5 days. We put him in when we ate breakfast and he carried on the whole time. I waited for him to quiet down, then treat and let him out. We have 2 cats who have made their presense know last night. Now he cries when he doesn't see them. Now they are upstairs sleeping. He won't settle. He's so tired and over stimulated. Like a child who can't have their way. It's been 12 years since we've had a puppy. I've forgotten LOL

blackeyesue
I do have a crate question. this is the first time using one. what do other owners use them for besides sleeping and when you're not home. time outs? if you're busy doing something else? billy is whining like crazy today because we won't let him have the run of the house. after 5 short days. didn't take him long. if i put him in the crate, he'll whine. just let him? moosikins
We have a metal cage that's too big for Callie, but I like her to have more room than is necessary (it's mastiff sized and she's only 40 lb) that we use during the day when we're at work. We just don't trust her yet not to steal and chew on our stuff out of boredom. She only goes into this one during the day and the very occasional time out. She doesn't really get wound up for long enough periods that we have to cage her to decompress. Â We also have one of those dark plastic kennels that's considerably smaller that we keep in the bedroom and that's only for nighttime. She used to sleep in there and get locked in, but now it's always open and she sleeps in there on her own when she's not laying under the cold window at night. It's her safe, cozy space. We never use that as punishment and she has some of my husband's old t-shirts in there that aren't allowed to come out of the night crate (they're for snuggling, not chewing), a blanket, and some toys to occupy her if she doesn't feel like sleeping. Â We ignored Callie completely when she whined in the crate (with the exception of silent potty breaks at night because she was too small to hold it - no talking, out of the crate, into the leash/harness, one enthusiastic "good dog" for going outside, immediately inside, and no more talking. She figured out pretty quickly that we weren't going to interact at night at all. And that extended to the daytime. She knows that when she's in the cage, she's meant to be quiet. It doesn't always work, but we ignore her and she settles down. Â I feel like if you train your pup to understand that you'll always come back, he'll always be let out of the cage after a period of time, good things happen to quiet puppers (a treat when he's quiet), etc., he'll just settle down quickly when you do need to crate him! TDFOSTER
Billy is beautiful! Congratulations. The fun has just begun. Puppies can be a struggle but they can light up your heart as well. I will be excited to hear his progress.
GentleLake
Crates are great for house training and chewing if you put the pup in it whenever you can't be actively watching to prevent accidents. Â Adorable pup.
brady's mom
When Brady was a pup, I used his crate for "nap time," which was just putting him in there for 20-30 minutes or so. It gave us both some much needed down time/quiet time. Â I'd also recommend putting your pup in there whenever you can't watch him 100% of the time, since they're babies and the minute you turn your back they'll get into something. Even if it's just for a minute or two (you could also invest in an xpen). Â He's such a cutie! <
highway61
Congrats on your beautiful pup! Kinda resembles this little "sweetie" Â Â My own BC "pup" is already 22 months and I still refer to him as "Tsunami Sammy"
borasaurus
I used to give Kieran his meals in his crate. He would sit in there patiently waiting until I set it down in front of him. I stopped doing that and now he's pretty...talkative.
blackeyesue
I am feeding him in it. He's only 13 weeks old tomorrow and we've only had him 5 days. He'll get it. Right now, there is no quiet time in the crate. He's exhausting and fun at the same time. This weather isn't helping any. Thank goodness he's house trained. Our front yard is fenced in and we have a wide path shoveled around it. And my husband made paths with the tractor so we can get some outdoor time in. But with temps around 10 during the day and minus at night, it isn't easy.
borasaurus
Oh, man, 10 degrees? I think I'd die, haha. But it would be nice to experience a "real" winter one day.
Gloria Atwater
Try getting him an x-pen for when you want to contain him but not necessarily in the crate. It will give him a little more room and you can keep him busy with a selection of toys. If you have room, you could even double up on x-pens and give him more space. What a cutie pie! Congratulations!~ Gloria
GentleLake
Oh, man, 10 degrees? I think I'd die  10 degrees would be a heat wave here in upstate NY. This has been one heck of a winter!
kiya
OMG what a cute little fur ball. Good luck with the crate training.
B Point
Great looking pup! Fun isn't it? We have a 14 week or thereabouts pup as well. Tio the older BC is only 21 months so it wasn't that much of a break from puppy life. It's still a lot of work though. Â Tio does get an assist on this one as he has been so amazingly helpful in teaching Juno "dog stuff". Their play together has ramped up in intensity quite a bit but they always end up chilling out and giving each other a lick. I take the dogs out to do their business together and again Tio has been such a mentor....it's really cool to watch a young pup emulating the older dog. The potty training has gone incredibly well. There's still the odd accident but that's usually our fault for leaving it too long. Â Having a good time.

blackeyesue
Thank You. He's very good. Crate training is going good. Put him in last night before we had dinner and he never made a sound. Fell alseep. Didn't even wake up when we finished. His energy hasn't peaked yet so we're enjoying the naps
