NorthfieldNick
My Lu, the mutt, has a lump in her breast. She's probably about 8 or 9- shelter dog, so no exact idea. She's been spayed since June '04, but she'd had a litter of pups shortly before that- she was just barely dry when she got to the shelter. I found a lump, about 1" x 2" in one of Lu's semi-floppy teats. I don't know how I missed it- she loves belly rubs & gets them often. It is in the same spot that she tore herself open on something several years ago. She tore through several layers of skin & fat, and had a bunch of staples. We're headed to the vet first thing Monday morning. I'm so very worried. I don't really have the money for an expensive treatment, but I'd find it somehow. Lu has been my dog from the moment I first saw her skinny, ratty self. I figured we'd have a good 10 years together & she'd grow old & grey with me. I don't quite know what I'll do if I lose that. I'm hoping for good- or at least reasonably treatable- news on Monday.
Sue R
I am hoping for a good diagnosis and outlook for Lu (and you). Don't be overly worried (easy enough for me to say) because there are many lumps that are not a problem. Very best wishes!
ThunderHill
Sounds like you found it early, and you certainly aren't wasting any time getting a medical check. Sending you and Lu many good thoughts. Liz S in PA
juliepoudrier
Best wishes for Lu, and calming thoughts for you. Try not to worry too much--it could be something as simple as scar tissue from the previous injury. Good mojo coming your way! J.
Maralynn
Try not to worry too much, there is a very good possibility that it could be scar tissue or a benign lump. Missy had two lumps removed when she was spayed at 6 y/o. They were tested, found to be benign and has not had another in the 4 1/2 years since then. NorthfieldNick
It's definitely a tumor. The vet sent a needle aspiration to a pathology lab to identify what type it is. Should have results tomorrow. It'll have to come out, in any case. Lu wasn't running a fever, she's acting normal, and has no other signs of being sick. Vet said chances are reasonable it's a benign lump. Thanks for the thoughts. Lu is handling things far better than I am...

Needle aspiration showed nothing and it eventually went away on it's own. I know how nerve wracking this can be though. Good thoughts being sent your way. NorthfieldNick
The news right now is not good. Not terrible, but not good. Lu has a mammary carcinoma. She's headed for surgery on Weds morning. If this is the only lump, she should be fine. If it's moved into her lymph nodes or lungs, prognosis is not good. Lu, of course, seems to think nothing at all is wrong. We went to the beach yesterday, and she spent the whole time happily finding icky things to roll in & dead crabs to eat... She HATES going to the vet, and it'll be stressful on Wed, but hopefully they won't have to keep her overnight. Thanks for the thoughts & mojo

MaggieDog
Lots of good thoughts! I've known several dogs who had mammary tumors, sometimes multiples, and all did fabulously after surgery to remove the tumor(s).
Liz P
Fingers crossed. It's a pretty good prognosis if it hasn't spread at all.
