ZoZo
So Jinx, our rescue dog, is not doing so good right now. He's really is such a sweet, wonderful guy. Yesterday he stopped eating (he loves food) and he seems mostly alright otherwise and I didn't think it was anything to be to be too worried about. He has been drinking water normally. Last night we could see something was bugging him as he was restless and still would still not eat. This morning he looked like he felt very bad, he gave us the saddest look you could image. We rushed him over the the vet first thing and he threw up a few times before we got there (nothing to show for his trouble). The vet thinks he may have some kind of obstruction from some wierd thing he ate and they are keeping him for observation, blood work and x-rays. Has anyone else had this problem with their BC? Is this something that often has to be treated with surgery? We feel so bad for him. He's had so many problems the last few months, a cracked tooth that needed pulling, a major hip joint operation back in October, tape worms and a miserable giardia infection last month, ugh! Maybe we should have given him a new name after all.
Chesney's Girl
I don't know how they deal with obstructions, but I hope he feels better soon and that its just an upset tummy.
Root Beer
Maybe we should have given him a new name after all. I'd probably change it to "Lucky"!! Seriously, I hope he gets to feeling better soon.
mbc1963
Ugh! That's awful. I've seen a few dogs with an obstruction, and they look so very sick! My brother has what they call the $3000 acorn, which they removed from his Springer Spaniel. Hope you have better luck and an easier blockage. Allie Oop
Well, last year Allie had what we thought was possibly an obstruction (and very similar symptoms to what you describe), but it was finally determined that what she actually had was a bad case of pancreatitis. Does he appear to have a tender spot or bulging area? Our vet also gave Allie a drink with little barium balls in it so that they could x-ray her gut and see if the balls were building up in a particular place (a blockage). Which we didn't really find. You say that they are doing blood work on him? The blood work is what was actually what gave us the biggest clue as to what was wrong. Good luck. I hope all goes well for the poor guy. ZoZo
No bulging or obvious tender spots that we saw on him. The vet told me he's very distressed, much worse than when he came in, but his blood work came back and everything looks fine on that. The first x-rays didn't show anything noticeable, but the vet said that doesn't necessarily mean there's nothing there. Jinx is getting the barium & multiple x-rays this afternoon, so hopefully that will turn up something.
Barb Scott
This morning he looked like he felt very bad, he gave us the saddest look you could image. Is this something that often has to be treated with surgery? Our BC Zip had an obstruction (he swallowed the wing of a plush duck); he had emergency surgery and then developed peritonitis but recovered fully. We now keep all our dog toys on top of the frig when we're not watching with both eyes. Barb S
ZoZo
Mystery solved. Well, Jinx came out aok, but we were really worried for a while. On Monday afternoon, Jinx got the barium and what seemed like a bazillion x-rays. The vet showed us everything and his GI tract looked fine, no indication of anything stuck anywhere but Jinx was still not eating, he looked horrible and was in obvious pain, although the barium seemed to relax things a little. We took him home and brought him back the next morning for another x-ray and the vet was not happy as the barium was just sitting there and not exiting. They shot Jinx up with some motility drug to get his digestive system busy and he looked much better by the end of the day and even ate a little before we picked him up. The vet said something should happen later (last night). At midnight Jinx needed to take care of some business and to my surprise out came a large portion of a rubber door stop! We think he dug that out of the back of a closet while we were gone a couple weeks ago. Looks like this thing made it all the way down but was acting as a colon stop (ouch). I can hardly believe a 36 pound dog could could get that thing out, but he did. He was one happy camper this morning and is back to his usual, perky, happy self and I guess we have to consider ourselves lucky he didn't need any surgery. Anda
Glad to hear Jinx is back to normal, after "giving birth" to a rubber door stop! That's so scarry! Yeah, I second considering a name change
shanni and kingsley
lucky dog.. and a name change is needed!
Shetlander
lucky dog.. and a name change is needed! Yes, but not to something like Lucky. Ironic positive names are about as bad as negative self-fulfilling ones. But great news that he is ok now!
