smileyzookie
We decided we are goin to extend our trip to Crater Lake and go to Mount Shasta for a day. We're saying in a cottage in Redding. Does anyone have any suggestions about awesome things to do probably more toward afternoon to evening? We will have Riven with us. =)
Dixie_Girl
I have two brothers and a sis that live in Redding! I will get with them and see what suggestions they have. When are you leaving?
smileyzookie
That is hilarious!!! We are leaving from Crater Lake August 24 and staying that night in Redding. Should only be like a 4 hour drive from the lake to Redding

amc
Hi Smiley, We're just outside Montague/Yreka, about 25 miles north of Mt. Shasta. Of course because we live here, we never do anything local! I would encourage you to stop off in Dunsmuir, a very cute, dog-friendly old railroad town that makes for nice walking. There are a few cafes with outdoor seating that will welcome your well-behaved dogs. Here's a link you might find useful. Most of the Forest Service areas are fine will off-leash dogs on the trails as long as they are not nuisances and don't chase the wildlife. Castle Lake is particularly gorgeous and will be less populated than Lake Siskiyou which can be annoyingly busy in summer. Castle Crags is beautiful; go to the Castle Crags Wilderness, not the State Park. Another useful link is here although it doesn't reference dogs specifically. Be sure to check the Forest Service website for fire closures as we've had a number of them in the wilderness areas this fire season. Have fun, and please take lots of pictures and let us all know how you enjoyed your trip!
