CiElBie
What are a good hair/shedding sheep breed for sheepdog training (that will include non-border collies and some close working breeds) Something that's on the heavier side and not too flighty (when raised properly) and has good flocking instinct. A bit stubborn or challenges the dog is ok. I'm looking at Wiltshire horns and exlana sheep. I've heard easycare sheep can be flighty, and Soay sheep and the like are flighty and have poor flocking instinct. I'm not sure about the other shedding breeds like Dorpers, Katahdins, Cameroon's etc.
amc
Katahdin x Dorper makes a nice dog training sheep. Good mothers, easy care, stay fresh if handled properly, shed their wool, and get fat eating air, basically. Tasty to eat as well. The higher percentage of Dorper, the heavier they will be, in general. Good luck in your search! Amy
CiElBie
I live in the UK so finding a Katahdin x Dorper might be difficult. I might be able to find a regular Dorper though but they are a bit rare and i've heard they can be prone to poor feet.
Journey
I haven't noticed any foot issues with my Dorpers - black or white headed. If you can find some Texel, they are also heavier natured, though you may have to sheer them.
