No TPLO surgery for Celt now

Thank you, all, for your well-wishes, concern, and advice. We saw the orthopedic specialist/surgeon this morning. She felt the x-rays showed no problems or indication of CCL tearing. She did an exam (not a sedated one) that was quite thorough and her conclusion was that there was nothing to indicate a need for surgery.

Her feeling was that he probably had a minor sprain and, with the rest and Rimadyl he's been getting, he should be on the road to healing already. He will be on three weeks of crate rest with the first two with Rimadyl. Depending on how he goes, if he is sound, he will begin activity after three weeks. If not, I will need to call her and we will have to see what happens next.

She was quite adamant, though, that she could see no need for surgery now. We are very relieved, know what to look for if lameness like this should occur again, and are extremely happy.

Thank you all for your well-wishes!

Yay! Board mojo works again! I know you're relieved, Sue, that you don't have to put Celt through surgery. I'll be sending healing thoughts his way. No matter how good he's looking, don't be tempted to let him off crate rest even the teensiest bit without approval from the vet. Hugs to you and Celt.

He's in the crate now, while the other two are having a wrestling match near me. Ed thinks I could go a little "easier" on him but I am going to follow her instructions to the letter. I am just very, very hopeful for a full recovery and no need for surgery now or later!

Thanks, Julie, you've always been a good friend!

I want you to know that Megan, bless her little heart, was our cowdog of the day. She is a dog of little talent and is also largely deaf. Since we had no alternative in moving cows and calves through five gateways and across a driveway and a road, I got behind with Megan on a 16' lead (please don't fry me - with her being mostly deaf, I had to be able to communicate). I used the lead to guide her gently (hey, some folks said it was good for dogs of little ability).

My mare, Molly, was complicating matters as I had forgotten her halter and lead and she was in a bit of a tizzy because she thought that her cows were leaving her behind. So, I took hold of the straps on her Miracle Collar (she's a horrible cribber - her top front teeth are worn flat) and, because I couldn't keep Megan on the lead, had to hand Megan over to Ed for a short while.

Once Megan had helped us get the cattle through a gateway, across the driveway, through another gateway, and then kitty-cornered and through another gateway (where I had to let go of Molly as it's down a little slope and jump across a ditch), across the road, and into a hayfield (whew, that's a mouthful) - then she and I went up the field a little ways, I took her off lead as she seemed to have the idea of what we were doing (Megan is very job-oriented - she doesn't take commands well but if she knows what you need, she'll do it).

She helped me gather up the cows and calves that were stuffing their faces, and went into the next part of the hayfield and retrieved the obligatory single calf that had to split off and then decide that it was going to be eaten alive by something horrible, but yet couldn't figure out how to walk back under the wire to its frantic mother. She helped me guide the cows and calves through the gateway into the next field, turn left, push them up the fenceline, and through the last gate into their next pasture.

She did this all with me directing her with hand signals (so a little obedience and agility training early in life did come in handy), some body pressure, and a desire to do the job. She was one happy girl when she was done. She'd worked, been helpful, and she knew it.

So, maybe the little dog that we "retired" when Bute began to work might just come in very handy while Celt is recouperating.

Wow, I missed this yesterday. Great news about Celt Sue! And wonderul news about Megan. A cookie for Celt and a steak for Megan for helping out. Its amazing how the lesser ones can step to the the plate when needed huh? I'll bet you are so proud of her! I hope Celt heals fast and is ready for work soon.
