First Heat....

Recommended Posts

From what I have heard, Border Collies are relatively slow-maturing and I think the majority of bitches don't come in until 8 or 10 months, or older. However, you will need to keep a close eye because onset of first heat is very variable.

Kenzie came in at 8.5 months, her mum was in at 9 months however dogs from her breeder don't usually come in before around 14 months. Kenzie's wasn't line bred out of her stock but from an outside dam (who's lines were known for coming in earlish).

I don't know what the average is, but Pan went into heat at 8 months, almost on the dot. If your dog goes into heat first, please consider waiting a few months before you do the surgery (see previous posts on my profile page--sorry if I'm repeating, I think I may have told you this before, but I figure better safe than sorry).
