Paw Problems

Our "very special" dog, Emily, has developed horribly sore, infected paws. Our vet says he has never seen this before. He has given us GentaVed Topical Spray and Cephalexin Caps for her. Her pads are actually coming off her paws and she hurts so badly she can hardly walk. We had been having allerlgy problems (hot spots) with her and changed foods and started her on fish oil and she responded beautifully to this. Then the paw problems started. Anybody have any help?

Thank you so much for directing me to the previous posts. We are taking Emily in to the University of California in Davis tomorrow. Unfortunately, her symptoms are similar to those described, and we have bird dropping around here, plus she has a cut on a paw. I hope and pray we are getting help in time, if there is any help. Thanks again.

We took Emily to U.C. Davis today and the news is not good. She doesn't have what we thought she might have, but she does have hepato-cutaneous syndrome. And from what they have told us, it is terminal. My tears are falling as I type. According to the Discharage Report, "In this disease, the live ris diseased and abnormal which then causes characteriztic lesions on the footpads and sometimes presure points like Emily's elbows. Unfortunatley, we do ot know exactly what causes this syndrome. A recent study by one of our dermatologists has shown that dogs with this disease hav elower levels of amino acids in their blood. Thus, the treatment for this condition is giving amino acides. Ideally, we give them intravenously, which requires hospitalization and central venous catheter placement. We also recommend suppleneting....., However, this treatment is only palliative and eventually the liver disease becomes severe enough that we can no longer provide a good quality of life with just the amino acid therapy." The prognosis is fairly poort long eterm for dogs with this disease, However, in our experience many dogs do wvery well with the treatment and can live up to a year with a good quality of life. Andy, my husband, and I have decided to try the treatment and if it gives her relief from the paw pain, then we will continue. If not, then we all know what the alternative is. She is not in any other pain at all, and if she can be pain free and have good quality of life for a few more months, then we will do it. We aren't ready to let her go until she lets us know it is time. And she will let us know. Then we'll have to deal with our pain. Thank you for your caring. I will be on this Board often as Border Collies are our love (we have another one-Julie-who is "hell on four feet" but a lot of fun!). And what a quiet, sad house this would be with no Border Collies!! What wonderful creatures God gave us.

I?m so sorry Jeanne - what a horrible thing. Thank you for being brave enough to tell us about it - we don?t all have access to specialised veterinary teaching hospitals, and the more we hear about unusual conditions, the more we can be on the lookout with our own dogs. Best wishes to you, your family and your lovely girl - and I?m so glad you have your Julie to help comfort you.
