MommaLove
Did you ever get a picture of Juno's red markings? Totally forgot all about it I'll have to try that tonight! Getting her to hold still with her belly up will be interesting
tastybeets
*phew* I thought I was the only one who thought dogfeets smell like fritos.
olivehill
If red pigment is there, but the dog also has a gene for black pigment, the red will show through only if the black fades (in old hair, for example). So if you have a black and white BC whose black fades to red (for whatever reason) it's indication that they carry red? What color does the black fade to if they don't carry red (are BB)? Grey? Or does it just not fade, akin to True Black in horses, maybe?
Liz P
So if you have a black and white BC whose black fades to red (for whatever reason) it's indication that they carry red? No.
juliepoudrier
Olivehill, Simplistic explanation here: Black and white dogs have red pigment that is masked by the black pigment. If the black fades, say, from sun exposure, then you can see a reddish tint that is the red pigment showing through. Red dogs are red because they don't have the gene--B--that codes for black pigment, so the only pigment they have is red. In other words, they all have red pigment, but you won't normally see red in those dogs who also have black pigment. It's the *absence* of the dominant gene that codes for black that produces red/liver dogs. Here's a page that might explain it more fully for you. olivehill
Thanks for the links, Julie. I knew there had to be something more to what you were saying. Got it now.
MommaLove
At long last, I've taken a photo of Juno's red fur. It's darker in real life than what showed up in the photo. On the inside of each thigh, a red tuft, and now as her coat is growing longer & fuller, she's got a red line down the middle of her belly as well. Liz P
That's probably just staining from moisture. It happens to white fur. ETA, here is Sage demonstrating stained fur. His dam spent a bit too much time grooming her pups. At least they were never dirty.
MommaLove
Nope, it's not staining. That photo was taken right after Juno's bath. I've seen plenty of stained fur in my time and that sure is not it. The fur itself is reddish. My older dog has red stains from moisture and it is completely different. Cynthia P
Could she be a tri color and that color is just coming out?
waffles
Levi has the same discoloration in the same spot. He is black and white. Never thought about it being anything other than staining.
Liz P
You can't wash out that sort of stain from white fur.
MommaLove
Could she be a tri color and that color is just coming out? That's what I was originally asking - this colour has grown in as Juno's adult coat has filled out (And before it's mentioned again - no, it's not moisture staining.) Liz P
Lift up her tail and take a photo of the fur around her rectum. Then we can answer your question if she is a tri color or not. Both sable and tan point tri colors will have a different color there. Black and whites (both K black and seal black) will have black fur. Cynthia P
I'm inclined to believe it is just some sort of staining. But taking a picture around her rectum will tell for sure if she is a tri or a black and white. A couple of friends have dogs that have developed tri in later times, but in typical places like cheeks and rear of the legs.
