Yes, there are many still around. In my area there are few Border Collies but all the ranchers I know have McNabs or McNab crosses. There is a very knowledgable breeder in Elk Creek, Ca. I maybe able to find his name, if you are interested.

There are people here that still remember the McNabs, as in the family not the dogs.

We may be gathering cattle today, if so I can attempt to get some pictures.

As for how they look. Most are prick eared, slick coated, small but solid and independent. Few are worked by themselves. Gathering off my land two or three are used. From the mountains and gathering large herds eight + may be used. I have never used or seen any on sheep but can see where they would be useful in mountains to gather large flocks.

This area is hot and dry in summer and the mountains are rugged and this is why the McNabs bred these dogs. They are as useful now as they were when he first bred them in the 1800's.

Thanks Suki

Would love to see photos.

I saw these dogs when I was a kid in the Siskiyous. And that was mountainous dry brush country. And I remember several dogs. These were all on wild Cattle.

I am glad they are still around.

Someday maybe I will see them in person!

Tea,

Yes, there are still McNabs around - some good ones too. Most are on the West Coast....mainly in California, but not all. Here is an article about McNabs by Eunice Williams with pictures I think you'll enjoy:
