White_Dog
Can a smooth coated Border Collie have merle coloration? If possible does anyone have any pics.?
juliepoudrier
Yes, coat length and coat color are completely separate. Kristine (Root Beer) on these boards has a smooth-coated merle. J.
PSmitty
Most definitely. I can think of at least one on the board, Kristine's Dean. Here's a link to one of her photo threads: http://www.bordercollie.org/boards/index.php?showtopic=28694 There are probably more board members with smooth merles, but I'm drawing a blank. Root Beer
Yes, Dean is a smooth coat merle. A friend of mine just said the other day that he always looks like he just stepped out of the groomer's shop, but it really is all natural!! (Of course, she knows he's a smooth coat - she was saying that in the way of a compliment). I've only seen one other, who is also a tri-merle. White_Dog
I had to ask because I have a double merle smooth coated Border Collie. People are always saying that he must be part Dalmation because he has short hair and a few black spots. It was starting to get to me, and I had never seen a smooth coated merle so I started to think he may be part Dalmation. But other than a few black spots he looks nothing like a Dalmation. Thanks for the replys!!

juliepoudrier
Does he have normal hearing? It looks like the spots on his legs are actually merle, not just black? J.
White_Dog
he's deaf. You'll have to explain what you mean by merle spots. But they are black. He has one very small spot that is brown. And looking at the pic again, I think most of that is sand. I don't have very good pictures of him because put my camara in the washing machine. oops! juliepoudrier
It's probably just the sand or the shadows, but it almost looked like he had some merling on his legs. I've washed a cell phone, but not a camera (yet), thank goodness. J.
