Genetics at the Finals

At this year's national sheepdog finals, the ABCA will be sponsoring a presentation about ongoing genetic research into adult early-onset deafness, epilepsy, and noise sensitivity/phobias in the border collie. Researchers Dr. Mark Neff and Jennifer Yokoyama will be present to discuss progress so far, the next steps, and the ways in which DNA samples will aid in the identification of the genes involved and how they work. They will be happy to take questions from the audience. This informative presentation will take place on Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm in the Meeting Tent on the trial grounds at Klamath Falls, in advance of the ABCA membership meeting. There will also be an opportunity during the day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to have blood drawn from dogs whose owners would like to support this research.

If we cannot attend the Finals but have a dog that would help (both noise sensitive and early onset deafness) how can we get involved?

All of the science conferences where I have attended presentations on research, you were not allowed to record (photos, video, or audio) the talks. There may be ramifications to the presenters in terms of possibly future publications (and patents) of these results if they are recorded and distributed. This must be clarified with the presenters before the talks are given.

We will be discussing with Mark Neff a written summary we can provide to the border collie community.

A written summary is in the works already. There are no current plans to seek patents or to profit from this research, but most of the data that will be presented are currently not published and are from studies that are in progress so they will not be widely disseminated yet. In addition, the project, which started as my postdoctoral project at UCSF, is now being spearheaded by Jennifer Yokoyama who will be completing it as her PhD dissertation, so any dissemination or publication of related data or results will be disseminated primarily through academic journals and properly attributed.

The preliminary results are being presented at the Finals as a service to the working Border Collie community, to whom we are all very grateful.
