trailrider
When you are living away from flea areas, and your dogs do not have fleas for many years, what would be a good procedure to prevent bringing them home when a dog travels? I usually put rotenone and diatomaceous earth powders in their crates, but one of these days there`s likely to be a problem, even though this has worked for 14 years so far. I depend on those who come here to train/visit with their dogs to have some prevention on their dogs too.
Sue R
With my vet's approval, I treated my dog with a topical (Frontline Plus) and then applied Capstar when I headed home. It was NOT the height of flea season (although with the mild winter weather where I was visiting, there had not been a real end to the flea season) so I'm not sure how great a challenge the fleas were, but I had no problem. Another time when I visited a friend who had had a flea problem, she gave me a double-dose (one size larger, not really double) of Frontline Plus to apply to each dog. This WAS during flea season in an area where fleas are a problem, and we brought none home. I understand the Capstar is an excellent choice if your exposure to the fleas will be of a limited time as it will kill those on the dog very quickly. Liz P
Frontline also makes a spray bottle version that can be applied on the day/s of exposure in addition to their monthly drops. Not all vets carry it so you may have to call around.
smileyzookie
We've had great success with Frontline as well.
Maralynn
I've used Bio-Spot for the past few years. I just apply it in the spring before flea/tick season and have had great success with it. From what I've heard from others who use it, Bio-Spot doesn't work the best for getting rid of fleas, but works quite well for prevention. I usually order it from Jeffers, but most farm stores here in Michigan also carry it. The cost ranges from $6 - $12 for a 3 dose package.
