Camden's Mom
When my father (who is a taxidermist) discovered that my dog enjoys chewing on antlers he decided to give Camden an awesome Christmas gift: several RACKS of whitetail deer antlers!!! Woohoo!! We'll be cutting them into more manageable pieces later today. All of the antlers we've given to our dog, thus far, have been store bought. The antler racks my dad is giving him are all untreated and from deer bagged between 2004-2008. So, a couple of questions... So do I need to treat, clean, sterilize or prepare the antlers in anyway or can I just cut them up and give them right to the dog? Also, should I be at all worried about the fact that the antlers are from deer killed five + years earlier?
GentleLake
I can't answer the age thing, though I don't see why it would be an issue. As far as cutting them, I was given some whole antlers last year -- which my dogs loved! -- and I just gave them to my dogs whole. It was fun watching them start with the points and work their way down.
bcnewe2
We have an old antler that is now just a small piece. All the dogs loved it. I have to buy mine as none of the hunters round here want to give any up!i think natural vs treated is better but have no proof.
cgriffin
My understanding is that they just need to be washed of under the tap. But that they don't need to be boiled or treated.
Gloria Atwater
If the antlers are 5+ years old, I'd say they're already as close to sterile as they're gonna get. Lucky dogs!~ Gloria
