BCkris
Just wondering for those who compete in obedience, how long did it take to train for your first competition? and how often do you train?

MicheleS.
I train about 2 years before entering a trial. Take class once a week, trained at least something almost every day. Could be a quick and light training session maybe 5-15 minutes. Maybe once or twice a week, trained longer, half hour where I would do a run-thru of all the exercises together. I do alot of training inside my house where I break down parts of exercises in between doing other things. For example, a quick stand-stay, or short bursts of heeling, a recall. Work on fronts and finishes, seemingly endlessly, in the house. I also take the 'show on the road' and go to parks or parking lots and practiced the exercises. Either I get together with friends or do it by myself. That helps alot as far as teaching the dog to focus in a new and distracting environment, especially when competing at the upper levels. Tennis courts are perfect for practicing.
