Grady came up lame tonight. It's happend one other time about two weeks ago. He has always had a slight gimp on the right rear side and has never walked a flight of stairs straight. I took him to the vets tongight and he gave him an anti imflamitory shot and wants me give him rimadyl for two weeks along with dog bed rest. He has no way of telling if it's really a tear or not and I would have to go to Cornell to have it checked out. BIG bucks there! I do have insurance on him, but it only covers just so much. Better than nothing, right?

Anyway....does anyone here have any advice on this? Down time? non surgical suggestions? Should I have an MRI done or see how it rides out in a couple weeks?

Thanks in advance

We had a similar issue with Celt. He turned up lame for absolutely no reason I could think of. The first vet treated it as a soft tissue injury but only with a short course of Rimadyl and no crate rest. Also, no improvement. The second vet was convinced it was a tear, with xrays and a sedated exam, and sent us to an orthopedic surgeon.

The ortho vet examined Celt (not sedated) and his xrays, and felt it was simply a sprain. She put him on three weeks' crate rest and two weeks of Rimadyl. He was going sound very shortly (didn't know how much of that was the Rimadyl effect) and ended the three weeks apparently sound - and has been sound since in spite of an active lifestyle, some hard work days (well, hard by our standards), and plenty of running and chasing.

I hope you find that your concern is as easily addressed as ours was. Best wishes!

Thanks for the well wishes :D Grady plays HARD and isn't always the most graceful BC. I'm hoping for a sprain. I have an email into a specialist. I'm just visiting the area and the vet I went to doesn't want to mess around with it too much. He says why pay twice to have it looked at, just go to a specialist. At least he's honest

He's better today, but favoring it on stairs. He can walk a straight line and has a bit of a hitch when changing directions. He's on bed rest and Rimadyl for now. I guess time will tell. Glad to hear Celt is better. Surgury in such youngs dogs seems kinda scary.

Scooter recently had problems with his right rear leg/foot. Major limping. Wouldn't put any weight on that leg. Of course it was the weekend, so by the time I got him to the vet on Monday, he was jumping around, behaving like nothing was wrong. Vet examined him, thinking it could be a CCL tear, did x-rays and said there was " a little fluid on the right knee." Put him on Rimadyl and restricted activity. No more problems in that area, but today he was having back/hip spasms from the hip dysplasia again. Hasn't had any of that in a long time. I'm wondering if it's the weather. Turning very cold and windy here today and DH had him outside running around for a while.

Hope your guy heals quickly and it's nothing serious. Very stressful when you know they're hurting.
