Shiloh's got a case of the runs!

Hi-

Shiloh has had a daily loose stool for the past 3 days. It will be solid in the morning and soft in the afternoon-like a puddle. He is crying a bit inside and able to hold it until we get outside, but this afternoon it was liquid and he seems uncomfortable. We have been feeding him kibble in the am and raw in the evening- I have a feeling that the raw at night ( we did lamb frozen mixed patties this week) is doing it so we are going to skip it tonight.

We happen to be going to the vet tomorrow so we will bring a stool sample- but in the meantime we are going to try a bit of pumpkin and probiotics. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Simona

If his poop is liquid, feed him boiled white rice mixed with boiled ground beef or ground turkey. Really, boiled. (It's more effective than sauteing at removing the fat).

If I were cooking rice for myself, I'd do it on the stovetop. For the dog, I use those "boil in the bag" white rice packets that you simply put in the microwave for ten minutes. I keep a box in the cupboard at all times, along with ground turkey in the freezer.

Please note: young puppies shouldn't be treated with home remedies such as this for diarrhea if it gets to the "squirt" stage. In such a case, you should call a vet immediately, as young puppies can very rapidly become dehydrated and die, even within one day. Very watery stools can be a sign of serious disease (like Parvo) in young pups. Older pups are more resilient but I'd still call or make an appointment if it doesn't clear up quickly (within a day or two).

Loose stools are, more often than not, a sign of some sort of parasitic infestation. They can also result from treatment with antibiotics. In the latter case, probiotics can definitely help.

I started feeding my dogs on raw in the evenings a while back and they did fine until I gave them those mixed patties. I think those things have more veggies in them than actual meat. Anyway, everytime I gave those to them they got soft runny stools. So after you get your pup back to normal, (a day of boiled white rice and chicken works) then just do regular raw meat and you'll probably be fine.
