Dal & Mad's Mom
I noticed Dal is going to have to have a teeth cleaning in the next year. He will be the first dog I've ever had that needed it. I would think it was diet except all my other dogs have sparkling clean teeth. Anyone have a guess why at 4 he might be plaqueing up?? Maralynn
What does he eat? I'd try offering him some frozen turkey necks or regular beef ribs to chew on once or twice a week. You could quite possibly avoid a dental that way.
Jumpin Boots
I second Maralynn, we started giving our dogs beef rib bones in the spring a few times a week and they are now all sparkly and bright. Our old rescue Mama Dog who has horrible teeth, she's had 2 dentals and never maintains them, and bad breath is actually maintaining a clean mouth. When Boots went to our vet in the spring and had his teeth looked at my vet didn't believe that he's 7 and has never had a dental; he also acted like he didn't believe me when I told him what we've been doing...but whatever. Plus the pooches love a good raw bone a few times a week.
bc4ever
How do I convince DH that raw meaty bones are good for Scooter? He's adamant about this. Says it can't possibly be healthy!!
in2adventure
My vet says the same thing about meaty bones, he also says use tooth paste. You don't have to actually brush the teeth, just rub the dog tooth paste on them every day. He says it will help neutralise the bacteria that cause plaque.
