lindat
Hi, I've been reading the dog food posts with much interest. My 6 month old BC puppy, unfortunately, keeps coming down with giardia. She is currently being treated with Panacur and is on Hills Prescription ID. I gave her the food since I was just at a loss of what to do anymore with her and the bouts of diarrhea she was having. I have two adult BC's that eat Solid Gold Lamb/Rice. The pup was on California Natural Chicken Rice. Her stool has firmed up on the Hills, but I need to get her off that food ASAP. I am looking at Orijen and Taste of the Wild. Orijen has the high protein content and TOTW is less, also less on the wallet. It seems like from the reading on this board, that I just have to experiment to find what she likes to eat and what produces a good result, for me that would be firm stool for her. I just am concerned about "experimenting", trying different foods all the time. Won't that cause a problem. I guess there is really nothing much else I can do. It does sound like many others have had this problem with their pups as well. I do want to get her on a good food that will make her a very healthy dog. Anda
My dog had about three giardia episodes as a pup - eventually we determined he was picking it up each time from some geese infested artificial pond - and has had an unstable stomach ever since. Never actually drew a cause-effect relationship between the two, but wanted to relate to your experience. We had to give him a giardia vaccine since he didn't seem to develop an immunity to the bug, like other dogs would after a first encounter. And we also followed up with CA Natural Lamb and Rice for about 2 years, which was ok on his stomach, but he just didn't like it. He's been on TOTW High Prarie - Roasted Bison - since the begining of the year and he loves it, he would often eat both breakfast and dinner - something unheard of before. It's ok on his stomach, and as long as I stop experimenting with all sorts of raw food, he'd probably stop having running stools once a week
mbc1963
My dog is also on TOTW High Prarie formula. He does great - I bought it because he started itching on Canidae, which had grain. No itching this summer, though I'm not sure it was the food. Just FYI: Once, I bought a small bag of the salmon formula TOTW, because my store didn't have the bison the day I went to buy. It completely bound Buddy up. He was pooping pebbles. ::Shudder:: So, I gave that food away and bought the bison again. And another FYI: I feed Buddy far less than recommended on the bag - I'm down to just over 1/2 cup twice a day, so just under a cup a day. He gained 3 lbs. this past winter, when I switched him over and was feeding 4/5 cup twice a day. So, all in all, it's probably not that much more expensive for me to feed grain free. lindat
Thank you very much for responding. I just found out that my adult has giardia. Vet just confirmed it and my older BC also has diarrhea, so I have a huge mess at home. I hope I can get this under control. Everyone is on meds. I think I will go with TOTW High Prairie for the pup. I just hope she grows up to be a healthy dog and I get rid of this giardia. It must be in my yard now. I am at a loss at what to do except spray water/bleach on the grass spots where they poop. They interact with each other, drink out of the same water dishes, it is just way to hard to keep them separated. I am using GermX myself so I don't get it! Laurena
We've had our dogs on TOW and they did quiet well on the food , had good firm stools on the Pacific Stream but we had some loose stools on the Wetlands . We switched our crew to Acana grasslands a few months ago , it's made by the same company as Orijen (Champion Pet Foods) but is a little lower protein and cost . They have beautiful coats , nice firm stools and the absolutely love it . Acana has three grain free formulas , Prairie Harvest which is chicken based , Pacifica which is fish based and Grasslands which is lamb based . Acana products are made from human grade ingredients and are ethoxoquin-free .
bcnewe2
we've been on TOTW since March. If I had other options I'd probably go with something else. The are doing ok but I've seen them look better, guess that was when I was feeding raw and I probably won't be happy till I get back to that. I switch between bags of TOTW and no one seems to have tummy issues and no poop issues. At least 2 or 3 times per week they do get raw. Like Mary I only feed about 1 cup total a day but spread out between 2 meals. Mick my only male and not my biggest gets almost 2 cups a day and he's not gained a pound but the girls were getting fluffy quickly. They seem to have adjusted to the smaller amounts but it took a while before they weren't always hungry.
