ClickMeBC
I've been seriously considerning supplementing with Glucosamine to assist my dogs' bodies in keeping up with the wear and tear that the cartilage in their joints go through in these performance sports. I've been receiving mixed messages and opinions as to whether it makes a significant difference - I truly do not know enough about it and have been doing some research, but I'd appreciate some knowledgeable opinions. Do any of you supplement your dogs, performance/working or not? With Glucosamine or other products? Do you have it injected or to you administer it orally? Input would be wonderful. BCMomma
I've used Glucosamine for a few years now and have noticed a marked improvement in my 11 year old. She acts like a 2 year old again but didn't prior to giving her a daily (oral) dose. My vet recommended it a few years ago and they both are very active "senior" BC's. We take Lili to a specialist for her GME and she too highly recommended the continued use for Lili along with the monthly treatments. So it can't be all bad! I'll be interested to read other replies. Guest WoobiesMom
I've been wondering about this too. There are alot of dogs at the park who are on prophylactic glucosamine trying to prevent problems or an early onset of problems that are inevitable in some. I wonder if it's okay to get it on board early in life before problems show up.
MagicGirl
I gave it orally to our dog Bandit from about the age of 5 till she passed at 13.5. We start from a recommendation from the vet when she showed up with a shoulder problem. Problem went away and never came back. I have personally been taking it for about 5 years. I ride horses alot and was having problems with my knees. I no longer have a problem. Magic which has just turned two is not on it, but I was just considering giving it to her for a preventive. OurBoys
JJ and Jake are taking it (orally). When we first adopted JJ, he had a hygroma on his right front elbow. When Jake first went into his foster home, his foster mom had to call in a chiropractor to re-align his neck and spine. Since it helps me with my knees, I figure it can't hurt them to use it as a precaution.
Guest pax
I wonder about using the stuff as a preventative. I am not so sure I would choose to go that way. I have used it in a variety of forms and on a variety of mammals, with good effect. Most recently I started Rosie after an arthritis dx. She hasn't gone off (gone lame) since. Guest pax
As a preventive, which way would you go? I don't know that I'd do anything other than the best nutrition possible and appropriate exercise, really. But you know what my level of experience is with performance dogs.
