OurBoys
The treats I make for JJ and Toby are just cookies. What I would like to do is buy some meat that's on sale and dry it in our food dehydrator. As anyone here ever done that? If so, how long did it last? Also, I'm tempted to ask the butcher what they do with the meat they don't sell. If they throw it away, I'm thinking about asking them for it. Do you think it would still be good to use? Thanks in advance for your opinions. ETA: In the first sentence I should have said JJ and Jake. (While their cookies were cooling earlier, that darn Tobi had jumped up on the counter and helped herself to their treats!)
Kayleegator
I've got a dehydrator too, Brenda: I'll share that recipe if anyone has got one!
OurBoys
Thanks, Beki!
WyoBC
The only thing I make is the little cookies. I haven't tried meat yet. Sorry, I'm no help.
Kayleegator
My dehydrator has an insert for making fruit leather. We could probably invent our own recipe using butcher's meat, a food processor, and maybe a little cooked brown rice and some soy sauce? I'll have to look at some traditional jerky recipes... OurBoys
Beki, I'm not going to use soy sauce. Too much sodium. With no kind of 'preservative' I wonder how long the dehydrated meat will last. Thanks anyway, AJ!
Kayleegator
I wasn't planning to use very much... but in any case, I just found an awesome website full of doggie treats: dried liver goodies, chicken dog chips made in the microwave, etc.: bookmark this one: http://www.dogaware.com/treatref.html I'm definately going to try some of these! bc4pack
You could also dehydrate things like chicken hearts and gizzards for treats.
Kat's Dogs
You can get the little dried fishies from Asian markets. Those make nice treats (esspecially if you feed raw...). They are really smelly and nobody ever asks to borrow a treat from you.
