Puppy Coming Home tomorrow

Recommended Posts

Well....after much soul searching, research, arguments, deliberation wailing and gnashing of teeth, we decided not to go with the breeders we had originally looked at.

After hearing alot of stories from various different people we decided to contact a local farmer.

We just come back from a farm in Coulter, Lanarkshire. About 34 miles down the road from us. A wee farm there with about a 1000 sheep up on the hill. The owner is keeping two of the litter for her own daughters because they want to train the dogs up like their mum Daisy.

He is likely to be a short haired BC (both parents are shorthaired) and I am excited and nervous all at once! He was quite timid with his sisters and they picked on him a bit, but when they were out of the way he was very friendly, liked my daughter alot and settled easily with both myself and my partner.

Will be taking lots of pictures tomorrow.

Congratulations :D

I hope you all have a lot of fun together. What are you going to call him? How old is he? Will I get a chance to meet him? How about coming to the club this Tuesday? Its Party night so it should be fun. Anyway I'm glad you got things sorted out. Summer is a nice time to house train a puppy. We were daft doing it in January in Scotland.

We calling him Ash cos he is almost black and it works with our interest in viking mythology and heathenry.

Yes I am pretty sure you AND Dale will get a chance to meet him.

We not sure about the thing on Tuesday because the pup will need his first shots. I will call the vets first thing Monday but I not sure how that would work.

Awww. I'm all googly woogly. I'm so envious - my puppers are both big boys now. Of course, big boys have their moments too.

Now you must take the Border Collie Boards Oath - raise your right hand and repeat after me - "I vow to carry my camera and snap as many piccies as my memory card/film cartrige allows at least once a day, and share them with my friends online."

I'm afraid you 'd have to come on your own on Tues.

You need to wait about 4 weeks before the 2nd injection and they're not meant to mix with dogs before then. At the club they ask to see vac. cert. before you bring a dog in. Its sensible really. You don't want them to catch anything nasty. When we got Dale he'd already had his 1st innoculation at 6 weeks The vet split up the others giving him one at 10 weeks and the rest at 12 weeks. Apparantly one ,and I can't remember which, must be given 4 weeks after the 1st lot but another one gives them better protection if you wait 'til 3months to give it. So really there was no advantage in starting at 6 weeks rather than 8 . We still had to wait. You can take him out if you visit somewhere where's no other dogs and some places say its OK if the other dogs have been vacinated. Different vets seem to have different ideas. The one we saw at 10 weeks said we could take him out to socialise him as long as we kept on hard surfaces and away from unvacinated dogs. You want him to meet lots of people and animals while he's young but not to risk his health. Its a frustrating time, but it means you have time for him to settle and bond with you. With children in the family and school holidays starting I'm sure you'll get plenty of visitors for Ash to meet.:D:D You could also take him out in the car to get him used to it and then carry him for a bit so he gets to see traffic etc. It really is fun having a pup :rolleyes:And they do grow up soooo quickly :D

My rule is, ten weeks around responsible people (with proper precautions) and then about sixteen/seventeen weeks for the world at large (except for mixing with high risk dogs).

Congrats on the new puppy. Lots of pictures are great! Even though I'm bad at getting new ones up.

If you think that's bad, you should try housetraining a puppy in January in Canada :D

Congrats on the new puppy, I can't wait to see pics and hear some stories! :D

just posted a couple of pics in the gallery. Will get some more but he is sleeping just now after his big adventure! He is also camera shy!

He threw up twice on the way home, but all things considering I think that is quite good lol. His first meeting with the cats was interesting.

Rainy went nuts, Grim just looked at him and I think she has fallen out with me. Greebs just walked round him lol

The throwing up in the car is probably car sickness. Molly was pretty bad when we first got her, but these days we see no signs of car sickness and she hops eagerly in the car to go for a drive. She seems to think of the car as her home away from home (she has her own space in it and sometimes gets something to chew when we leave her alone) and loves watching the world go by. I hope he grows out of his carsickness, settles down happily in his new home, and that you all are very happy.

Becca---no one told me about this oath. I haven't done that with Molly. ;-)
