Do you clicker train her - there are heaps of tricks that you can use to keep her mind occupied while recovering. Maybe now might be a good time to work on a leave it or come command (which ever you prefer) - that can be clicker trained as well. This is just a thought but since you have the time and are looking for something new to train her why not start with "drop it" or "leave it"? You said, Now whenever she picks something small up I take it from her immediately. This might be a good place to start. It could save you from any unexpected future vet bills.
