laurie etc
Weird Question - I know that horse minerals contain too much copper for sheep - but is it OK if the horse and donkey who are now sharing the pasture with my sheep eat some of the loose sheep mineral? They are both older, mature animals. Would you put a plain salt block out as well - or is that not a good idea with the sheep around? Rebecca, Irena Farm
Yup. It's OK - the government doesn't allow above a certain percentage of selenium, which is the only thing that is elevated in sheep blocks. My old livestock vet, who was a sheep specialist, mentioned this. The extra salt is OK with the sheep - they will probably laregly ignore it since there's already salt in the loose mineral. Just be really careful that there's easy access to water - I have multiple water sources at different parts of the pasture right now, and mineral blocks or loose mineral available at each one.
