J. Williams
I was going to post this under training, then realized the forum was specifically for sheepdog training/trialing - so I ended up here. Anyway, I have new dog. He is 20 months, well started with a nice stop, good flanks, and a developing outrun that's at about 200 yards right now. I compete in cattledog trials, but have sheep to start my pups and tune up mature dogs. Up to this point, all my dogs would/could work sheep or cattle. However, while this dog has quiet, mindful control of cattle, he gets, well, a bit crazed when asked to work sheep. My question is this - should I force the issue and argue about working sheep on principal? Or do I abandon sheep altogether and just work the dog on cattle? Guest PrairieFire
Nope, just go to cattle. In my expereince, I've placed a couple pups/started dogs of mine in cattle homes because they were just "too rough" on the woolies...and loved and were fine on cattle... Count your blessings... J. Williams
Thanks Bill, sounds logical. I was hoping that the "right" approach wasn't going to involve labor intensive arguments over the sheep, but I would certainly do so if need be.
