odd behavior

Our little mini aussie (four years old) is having trouble off and on. I've had her to the vet and they can't find anything wrong. Of course she never shows any symptoms by the time I get her there.

She will sometimes run and play after the other dogs and sometimes not. She occasionally yikes and falls over when she's eating. sometimes she stands holding a hind leg in the air as if it were tied to her belly but then just walks away normally. She will sometimes have difficulty walking up stairs as if she can't see them and other times will run right up. The other day I parked in a different spot than normal and when I let all the dogs out of the truck they hopped over a short retaining wall and ran off while Abby just ran smack into the wall as if she couldn't see it (she was going fairly quick and hurt herself poor little girl) and yet at other times she seems to be able to see alright.

Mostly she seems perfectly normal although we are noticing more and more things happening more frequently.

I'm bewildered.

Shawna, it sounds like you little one could be experiencing neurological problems. One of the first things that I would check out is her eyes to see if there is a problem there. If she is running into things, I would be most concerned about her eyes. I don't remember where you live so don't know if you are close to an opthamologist to have a proper eye examine done.

I've been told the nearest opthomologist is 400km from here. They come up this way every so often to do clinics though.

I was planning a trip into Alberta but was waiting for the weather to get nicer. I could probably get her seen in there if nothing else.

Because her sight problems seem to come and go I was wondering if it was connected to all the other things that are happening. If it is neurological it could affect all areas and may explain why none of the symptoms are consistant in their appearance, right? Or am I completely out to lunch here?

I can't give you any idea of what is wrong.

But, if you own a video camera, I would suggest carrying it with you and tape her. Maybe if the vets and/or specialists saw with their own eyes, they would get a better idea of what is going on. Since some of it happens sporadically, video will be a sure way to show the non-believers that you are NOT making stuff up...

Shawna - neurological problems can certainly come and go depending on what is going on with your dog. Videotaping is an excellent idea. If you can do that, you not only want to video tape when she is acting strange, but also when she is normal, so that there is a solid comparison.

Has she had any kind of head trauma at any time that you can think of - no matter how insignificant it seems now or at the time it happened. Head injuries are very interesting and it is amazing what problems develop from them, even years later.

One of my friends had a little dog that was acting really wierd. Would run around sometimes and then just lay down and refuse to move.

Turned out he had hurt his back - something to do with the disks - and it caused pain sometimes and sometimes not.

Just a thought - diabetes in dogs could cause all kinds of things. It affects eyesight. And if the blood sugar is going too low it could cause staggering and running into things. But I think there are other signs - like drinking water and big appetite but loss of weight.

Dog's illnesses can be such a mystery.

No head trauma that I can think of although she was flipped by the husky once when he ran by so maybe she smacked her head. That was three years ago.

We don't see ticks much but I can ask the vet about it.

If her eyesight didn't seem to come and go like everything else I would guess that the pinched nerve thing was likely. I suppose that's the place to start looking.

Thanks for all the input.
