jc
I would like to become a professional dog trainer but I am not sure how to get started in this business. What is the best way to get started? My only experience in this field is training our own dogs so I'll need a bit of training myself. Rave
JC, Find a local training school where they'll let you first assist, then possibly teach, classes. It's a great learning experience to work with all different breeds and with the public as well (who are by far much harder to train!). Read as much about training theory as you can. Find and attend workshops and seminars taught by the leading trainers in whatever field you would like to get into. Petsmart now offers a training program for their new instructors that is positive-based training. Basically, just get involved with the local schools and apprentice under them for awhile, that way you'll be covered as far as insurance goes. And it's much easier to have them handle the admininstrative stuff too! Laura Raleigh, NC
