scooby's dad
Scooby-doo's first agility class is Thurs. I know I'll be more nervous than Scooby (he's a social butterfly)! This will be quite the adventure! Can you guys tell be what your first class was like?
Tassie
Any first class is always exciting. Depending on the training method, agility classes can be very, very exciting, so probably good advice is to sit back and have a good look at how things are being done, and not to let Scooby go OTT. One of the important things you?ll need to have him do is to mind you even when he?s way excited. Take things slow and easy, and let him learn well, so you don?t have to go back and re-train. Border Collies usually have no problem with course speed, so concentrate on safe technique and control - e.g. teaching the end of the contact obstacles first, lining up so you?re straight onto obstacles etc. You?ll be tempted to rush him, but it?s better to learn the right way first up. Have lots of fun - and don?t forget to warm your dog and yourself up, and do your stretches after - both of you!
scooby's dad
Thanks for your kind advice! Getting Scooby to behave even when he is excited will be a big challenge. Scooby is only 13 months old and just starting to settle down. I see a GREAT friend in him and a hard worker in agility. Obediance was a snap except he still likes to jump up on people especially when he's excited. But he is improving! Thanks again!
