Gingivitis

I took my 5 year old BC in for his annual exam and titer check yesterday. All is good with the slight concern (by the vet) that Torque shows the beginnings of gingivitis. He has very little tartar, but the edge of his gums are a little red - which is a sign of gingivitis as explained to me by the vet. He says it is because the tartar is under the gums, and the "only" way to get rid of it under the gums is to have his teeth cleaned. Obviously I would prefer not to spend the $$ - but I am wondering if I had his teeth cleaned at this early stage of gingivitis and then paid better attention to his dental health so he doesn't build up ANY tartar at all in the future - might be the way to go. This is the option the vet is pushing for. We talked about brushing, bones, rawhides and enzymatic cleaners, but the vet feels that none of those will get the tartar that is under the gums - so cleaning should be done.

I am interested to hear other opinions and experiences to help me make a decision.

TIA,

Jovi
