ejano
Hello all, with the new year, I'm getting more serious about my goal to take Robin to obedience rally. Today, when running through some paces, I realized that Ladybug who came to us as a rescue four years ago is already pre-programmed with all necessary commands would make a good starter dog to tow me around the ring. . How does one go about locating rally competitions? I live in eastern PA and would not want to travel too far --- also, I see there are two sponsoring organizations AKC and another one - APDT....the rules are apparently slightly different....I have to wonder, why is the world so complicated . Also, there was a site on the internet where you could print out the signs for free but the link is shut down....does anyone have the MS word or PDF file? elegy
Which are you interested in doing? AKC or APDT? (or both?) This is the website for APDT and there is a calendar of events on it that tells where all the trials are. http://www.apdt.com/rally/default.aspx You have to register your dog with APDT. I think turnaround time is 3 weeks-ish. AKC event search is on this page http://www.akc.org/events/index.cfm?nav_area=events The rally signs and rules for both organizations are on their websites. Search around a little bit- they're not too hard to locate.
ejano
Which are you interested in doing? AKC or APDT? (or both?) I guess it depends on which is available in my area -- I know there's an AKC event close by in July. Is there a big difference in the two? Root Beer
Hey Liz, You should be able to find APDT Rally in eastern Pa. Check here to see if there is a competition near you. There are some in New Jersey, too. Since I'm not sure where you are in eastern Pa, I can't say if the New Jersey ones are near you or not. http://www.apdt.com/rally/calendar/details.asp?Type=1 My recommendation is to start with APDT Rally. Yes, the courses are longer and it is a bit tougher, but you can have food in your pocket in the ring. You can't treat willy nilly (except in Vets - LOVE IT!), but there are certain places where you can reward. For some dogs, knowing that there is food in your pocket can help build a bridge to the no-food level. Although in APDT, you can always have food. But in AKC and UKC you cannot. It's been a long time since I did AKC Rally, but in some ways it is much easier. The courses are shorter and simpler. But at AKC Rally trials, you sit and you wait and you wait and you wait and you wait . . . There is waiting at APDT trials, but it's not so bad and usually you can do more than one course in a day. (I am not advocating participation in AKC events, just stating objective facts from past experience). I've done both, although I have not done UKC. If you have specific questions about the differences between the two, or about APDT Rally (in which I still participate), I'd be happy to try to help. I got into dog sports through Rally. Speedy has six Rally titles and Dean has one. ETA: Click here and scroll down to find APDT signs for print out. http://www.apdt.com/rally/rules/default.aspx

I'll have to put up a map and plot it out..... Thanks for the link! Liz
