Moss
Taken from the Farmers Guardian ... JIM Cropper’s current form is best described as ‘unbeatable’ as he won all three of the open trials in the North of England at the weekend. Over the last two weekends in April, Jim has entered five trials and won them all. On Saturday Thomas Longton hosted the Lee End Open at Quernmore, near Lancaster. John Huddleston, Overhouses and Tom Whitfield, Caton, judged the entry of 71 dogs. The course was set on a different field than usual. The first half of the fetch, which overall exceeded 250 metres, was fairly flat. A small ditch was then encountered, which had to be jumped and where also were the partial remains of a hedge. Beyond the ditch the ground rose up to the lift. Most dogs went out right-handed as this was the most natural gather and they could be seen all the way. To the left there were some trees and a dip that could bring them in. Over the early morning the Herdwick hoggs tended to be rather touchy, but soon settled down and the standard of running was good. At number 35 Jim went to the post with Dan. ‘A brilliant run’, was how the judges described their trial. After a perfect outrun and lift, Dan dropped just odd points for very minor deviations of line down the fetch and over the driving. A tight turn was needed at the last obstacle, which consisted of three hurdles. Here the hoggs had to be pushed through the top two gates then turned back between the middle and the bottom ones, a task Dan carried out extremely well. Often the hoggs were reluctant to pass through the chute that replaced a pen and where the tall, smooth-coated dog had a slight slip to lose two points. Finishing with a clean single gave Dan the winning score of 93 of 100. Two dogs came close to matching his points – Pat Noble’s Jack at number 43, then Thomas Longton’s Jake at 55, but both fell one mark short. Running at 28 Sophie Holt was the best young handler gaining 87 points with Sid. RESULTS : LEE END, Lee End Farm, Quernmore, Lancaster, Open (71 ran): 1, J. Cropper (Deerplay) Dan, 93 of 100; 2, Thomas Longton (Quernmore) Jake, 92, OLF; 3, P. Noble (Quernmore) Jack, 92; 4, T. Huddleston (Caton) Brook, 90; 5, J. Cropper Don, 89; 6, L. Penswick (Little Eccleston) Mirk, 88. Young handler: S. Holt (Rawtenstall) Sid, 87.
