Sue R
The Buckeye Cow Dog Association recently completed its largest trial to date with over 135 entries spread out amongst the various classes throughout the Friday evening through Sunday stock dog trial at the Rafter L Bar Arena in SE Ohio in October. The overall cattle champion for the weekend was Canadian stockman Elvin Kopp with his young dog Cody. Tyler Shupe, from Indiana, won the overall sheep championship with Dexter. Complete results will be posted soon to www.buckeyecowdog.com The classes were very competitive with only seconds separating the winners in many instances. The next trial is November 17, 18 and 19. It is named in honor of Choc Ericsson who was killed in the line of duty as an Oklahoma drug enforcement officer last November. Entry forms may be downloaded from www.buckeyecowdog.com The events begin on Friday evening around 6:30 p.m. with a USBCHA sanctioned Nursery cattle class. USBCHA sanctioned Open sheep and cattle classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday as well as other classes. All classes for this trial will be points plus time with an 7-8 minute course with 7 obstacles. The arena course features a countdown timer and several challenging obstacles. Depending on the weather and the total number of entries, there may also be open field divisions. The trial is open to all handlers and breeds of dogs. In the last trial, Kelpies, Hangin' Tree Cowdogs, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies and blue heelers competed. Only BCDA members will accumulate points toward year-end high point awards however. An organizational meeting of the new registry for the Hangin' Tree Cowdog Association will be held on Thursday November 16, 2006 during the Gary Ericsson Stock Dog clinic. There is a 50% payback in each class with payback through five places in the larger classes. Prizes and awards will also be given. Indoor rest rooms, on-site concessions, horse stalls and camper hook-ups are available. A Saturday night handler's dinner will also be offered. The popular and growing Horseback Cattle Class will also be conducted each day. Handlers must either bring a horse or make arrangements to use a horse for the class. Entries are now open and will close on November 1, 2006 or when all of the classes are full. Post entries will only be accepted if room and time permit. Entry forms, directions and motel information may be downloaded from www.buckeyecowdog.com or www.lavellefarms.com . Please contact me with any questions. John P.
