chloe lover
Hi I am new to this site. I would appreciate some insight on my 6 year old female border. Her name is Chloe and she has problems with skin allergies. Over the last 5 months she has been suffering from these. She has been to the vet 2-3 times for this. We have treated her with Prednisone, Flagyl, Cipro, and they also gave me this oil stuff in a pump bottle and told me to use it 2 pumps daily in her food. It is some type of dietary supplement. Skin scrapings were done that were negative also. We did all that. She also at times has red inflamed bumps on her underneath belly that look infected at times. I have spent lots of money on this trying to help her. She has gained a lot of weight also on the steroid. Now I am looking for other opinions. Right now she is finishing up the steroids and still has these small bumps all over her that once who move her fur away to look at the bump you see that she is peeling her skin like a flaking of the skin. When I brush her she looks like snowflakes have fallen on her or like dandruff in her fur. It's gross! i am desperate to find some answers without spending more money at the vet. can anyone help me with some type of supplement or something? Allie+Tess&Kipp
I assume you have already ruled out allergies to what you feed her in terms of kibble or treats? What are you feeding her? You might consider a raw diet, as well (do a search on raw diet with the search function in the upper right for more information--it has been discussed here tons of times). She might also be allergic to something that she comes in contact with. Things to consider for that are what she sleeps on, the yard, places you take her to play, etc. She may be allergic to some chemical or fertiizer used on grass, or maybe allergic to something you put on your carpet, if you have one... If you use any stuff like that. Do you take her swimming or anything? Might be something in the water. Does she have flareups? If she has flareups and periods where she is much better, then keeping a journal of her activities and what she eats and where you go as well as tracking the flareups could help you determine what is causing it... She might be allergic to whatever you use for a bath, if you give her baths... I hope my bumping your question up to the top again will bring more folks in with ideas for you... Laura L
My Scottie developed terrible allergies when he was about 4 years old. It was the worst in the fall. My vet tried several different things, nothing really worked and the prednisone just made him fatter. We tried the Missing Link food supplement, that didn't work either. It went on for about 5 years, until I changed to Canidae for dog food. He didn't have a problem after that and he lived to be 15.
Tiga's_mom
I completely understand your frustration. Tiga has allergies and we don't really know what he's allergic to either. He takes allergy pills regularly right now. Switching his food helped a lot, but he still gets hot spots on his front paws. He eats a hypoallergenic food from the vet, it seems to be the only thing he'll tolerate. We do know that he's allergic to flea bites. When he gets bitten, he gets bumps on his belly that get infected, so we treat him regularly with Advatage-Multi. I'm going to get allergy testing done on him when I start my new job and can afford it. I would suggest doing that if at all possible.
