Pannus in Border collies

I've got an almost 4 month old BC puppy with a 4 yr old half sister recently diagnosed with pannus. I haven't been able to find out any information about pannus in BCs. How prevalent is it in the breed and is it hereditary? I know about it being related to high elevations - I live at 8000 ft in Colorado and have a Belgian sheepdog with it. I've also heard it can be related to the level of protein in the diet - What's a good level of protein for her to be getting?

Hi Phoenix,

I've got some info about pannus on my website (Health/Eyes):

Black Dog Farm's Links

A good friend of mine has a dog (border collie) that was diagnosed with pannus about a year ago. To be quite honest, I'm not sure how he's doing now but suspect it's under control. FWIW, we're not at a particularly high elevation here in CNY (maybe 1100 ft. max on the hills), but Tag is a working sheepdog on a farm and is outside most days.

I haven't heard anything about a protein connection. Perhaps Denise can help - she's written about eye diseases in border collies.

Good luck.
