Maralynn
I was asking around on another forum about Skijoring and got some good info and links, but I'm wonder is those of you who have done skijoring or sledding with BCs have a favorite type/style of equipment/harness/etc that seem to work well with the breed? I think I'd love to get into this with Kenzi at least. She can pull like crazy on a leash so I'm kind of thinking that she might be a natural if I get her in the right equipment. MyTDogs
I like the Urban Trail Harness. Custom made & priced right. Depending on the length of your tugline you may be able to use an x-back (cheaper I think). In general if the line rises steeply to your waist from the dog then you shouldn't use an x-back but if it is long enough you can get a away with it (angle is flatter). I LOVE scootering but it is just. too. hot. in FL almost all the year. We have to go at night & it is so unsafe around here that I finally gave it up. A good site is dogslovetorun.com Have fun! Maralynn
Thanks for the link! I ordered a harness and tugline from them last night. I went ahead and got the x-back harness. Can't wait for it to get here, I've been interested in dog sledding for years now and this seems like it could be a great alternative!!
jmccormick
I Skijor with my Border Collie in northern New Jersey. It is great exercise for him and alot of excitement for me. The only problem is he is headstrong and will go off trail when he picks up the scent, or sight, of deer or squirrels. That's where the quick release comes in handy. Maralynn
I finally got the harness I ordered from the link Cindy provided. Very nice gear, but it took a long time to get it (IMO at least - with a 6 week turn aroun I expect some communication about the status of my order or at least a response when I call/email after 4 weeks...) And it came the first day we had no snow on the ground. Sigh. But we got a fresh coating last night so I harnessed Kenzi up and hooked to her to a child's platic sled that was slightly weighted. I jogged beside her to get her going and after glancing back a couple times to see what in the world that thing was, she started pulling pretty nicely and wasn't phased but the whole thing at all. I'm looking forward to working with her a bit more before the snow melts again
Pearse
The skijoring harness comes in handy when running with four dogs who need to be on leash (city rules) too. I usually have two on a coupler in the middle and two on single leashes on the left and right. Four Border Collies skijoring you can get moving right along. Four Border Colies running, likewise, if you hit an icy patch.
