adesouza89
My female has had mastitis for sometime now. My vet and i have had her on Clavamox & Baytril. She's been on Clavamox for 8 weeks and Baytril for 1 week. Its getting really expensive and ANNOYING!! She still has a lump about the size of a Nickel . I'm not sure what else to do. I've had some people tell me to leave it, others to tell me to do surgery. My vet isn't being very helpful. Has anyone gone through this? A lady suggested to me to use alcohol (dab my fingers in alcohol then massage). To get the lump warm and to massage it with my fingers. I'm at my breaking point... Thanks =\
stockdogranch
Are you talking mastitis or a mammary tumor? Is/was the bitch lactating? How old is she? A

BCjetta
If it were me, I'd give the baytril another 2 weeks. Its one of the strongest antibiotics out there so if it hasn't done anything in 3 weeks, I don't think just treating it with drugs would take care of it. hornblower
Hello, I'm an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant - for humans. It sounds like your bitch may have an abcess. While mastitis (which strictly speaking is generalized breast infection rather than an abcess) will usually resolve with abx, a deep abcess may not. In humans, these are generally surgically opened & drained. (btw, humans can continue to breastfeed even when their abcess is being surgically drained). You can try to gently heat & massage the area, and to try to express that teat to see if you can move it, but if it's been there some time & is not budging, it needs draining. You could try needle aspiration but my reading of the literature is that in a large abcess that has been present for some time, these tend to just refill. In these cases I&D (incision & drainage) is the preferred tx. She would continue abx post op until she's all healed up. best wishes ~
BCjetta
Eeew....humans can get mammary abscesses? I'm an AHT and the thought of an animal with mastitis or an abscess doesn't bother me at all...but the thought that I could get that....yuck!
