rtran
I have a red/white border collie that is almost 5 months. Her parents have long hair but my puppy doesn't seem to show signs of being long yet as its still pretty short. I've seen other BC around the same age and they have alot more hair. How long does it usually take before her coat gets long? Rich
rtran
People have questioned me if its a real BC and I did too at one point but I have her parents and her papers registered through the ABCA. She also has the traits of a BC...color/wants to herd/great prey drive/very energetic/super smart
NCStarkey
Hi Rich, You pup is probably a red tri-color (red, tan, and white), as she appears to have tan on her face and back legs (and probably under her tail). Also, she may be a smooth coated Border Collie, so she might not develop a long hair coat at all. But, she sure is cute when she is sleeping! nancy in AZ
Was this an intentional breeding??

She is tri color...she has some tan spots here and there that I forgot about. Is it common for some puppies to be smooth coated although both parents have long hair? NCStarkey
Hi again Rich, I am definitely NOT a geneticist, but I do believe that smooth coated pups can be produced by two rough coated parents (someone who is more knowledgeable than I will probably reply on this subject, please!). rtran
Thanks Nancy. I figured it should be somewhat long by now at least so she probably will be a smooth coat BC. I didn't know how fast the hair grows.
rtran
Do they have a stage where their hair just grows dramatically or is just gradual most the time?
