He was named “Rookie of the Year” at the 2001 USBCHA and ABCA National Finals at the age of 20. He was the 2000 champion at the prestigious Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials, and is a three time winner at the Western States Regional Championship. Derek may be a pro, but he also knows how to start dogs and handlers, too. This clinic is for people with little or no experience, but who are interested in learning about herding and the right way to get started for them and their dog Topics the clinic will cover: • Getting started • How to continue training after the clinic, even if you don’t have sheep • An evaluation of each dog’s instinct and ability • Beyond the initial evaluation, the dog and handler will get a second run on Saturday and two runs on Sunday Derek is known for his ability to “read” dogs and to tailor his training methods to the individual dog/handler team. He is fair and consistent and brings out the best of each dog’s natural ability. He is an interactive trainer who welcomes questions. This clinic is for people who are interested in trialing or just want to have fun in a team sport with their dogs.
