Star of the North SDT - Results

The third annual Star of the North Stockdog Trial was held October 10th - 12th at beautiful Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista MN just west of Minneapolis/St. Paul.

The trees surrounding the trial field were nearing peak Fall color providing a spectacular backdrop for the trial despite the weather hinting at June rather than mid-October. Daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday were in the mid to upper 70's. Friday was a little cooler, only mid-60's but both sunny and pleasant. The sheep were a mixed breed flock and worked well all three days seemingly at their most challenging on Saturday. The judge for this year's trial was Sue Main from near Bala Wales and she did an outstanding job of sorting out the runs.

This year we had a very good Novice class and special mention must be made of our two youngest handlers. Brenna Harrower placed first and third in the Novice class running Grace. At only thirteen years old, she will be a handler to watch for the future. Not far behind her in age and placing was Maddie Mahon running Bet, who placed 4th and 5th as well as being invaluable to me, along with mom Claudia, in helping with scoring and keeping handlers supplied with refreshments.

Close to 600 people came to watch the trial on Saturday and Sunday. The good weather and the Gale Woods Farm "Celebrate the Harvest" event contributed to the strong turnout, but several people I spoke to have now come to all three trials and have told me it is becoming a regular fixture on their calendar. Part of the reason for holding the trial where we do is to give folks in the Twin Cities a chance to see dogs working stock and those who see it for the first time are always amazed at what these dogs can do.

Many thanks to all of those who helped. Special thanks to Donna May, Richard and Kevin Bailey, Laura Miles, and Susanne Hoffman for help with setout. Claudia Mahon organized the clerking for Sue and took care of a lot of the running of the bottom end of the field. There were many people who clerked that I did not get a chance to meet or thank. Thank- you all. And, thank you to all of the handlers who supported the trial and put on a fine display of handling and sportsmanship.
