Guest pax
My favourite cat just came in with pine pitch all over his face. His nose is clear, and his eyes, but his cheekbones and eye socket on one side are completely slathered. I can't shave it off, I can't use something harsh so close to eyes and nose... Anybody have any ideas? This is him with Sweetpea..they play like this all the time.
Bordercentrics
My preference is for mineral oil. It's odorless and nontoxic, and it makes the tar unstick so it can be removed. If you use too much mineral oil, it's easy to wash off.

HCBell
Sounds like a fun project. Did you get it all off?
