Hi Amanda,

 

Many thanks for hosting this forum.

 

How would you work with a dog that has a tendancy to focus on the lead sheep of a group and allows stragglers to drift off?

Stragglers make nice opportunities to train. You are required to go out, and send your dog back for the ones left behind. Personal intervention. Don't let him proceed without picking up the rear. That can be a matter of eye, on the heavy side, or sloppiness allowed.
