Pippin's person
Here's a total newbie question about herding. How does someone become a "big hat"? I understand the difference between "big hats' and "little hats", but don't quite get what makes someone a "big hat". Is it just reputation or is there some actual watershed accomplishment(s)? Also, does anyone know where this moniker comes from? Thanks in advance
Rebecca, Irena Farm
I don't know if there's a watershed. Somehow I doubt it, since that would be inconsistent with all the rest of working Border collie culture. In my mind, a big hat is someone that you mention anywhere in the country, and they go, Oh yeah. In the early days of trialing, almost all the trialers were ranchers, farmers, or horsemen/women. They all wore big hats, pretty much. Then the next generation came along and nicknamed these founders of the trialing system here, "Big Hats." Since some of these were from overseas, I suspect there may have been some not-so-gentle ribbing involved here, as well.
