sharkie
Are any oh yalls dogs good at catching flys? I can't catch one with my hand or the electric fly zapper, but I've already seen Skye catch and eat several of those flying bugger in the backyard. She caught a house fly the other day and by the time we lifted up her paw there was only half of it left!
RaisingRiver
My GSD/Chow enjoys chasing and eating yellow jackets in the summer when we're outside. She doesn't play fetch, but she likes doing that. go figure.
Anda
Just after reading this post I went in the other room to see Ouzo eating a moth I didn't know what it was, I just saw it crawling so I had to open his mouth and check to make sure it's not a bee or a wasp! He loves chasing flies, and jumps on the walls if you make a "Bzzzz" sound in search of flies.
bc friend
My bc's couldn't be less interested. My mixed breed Rocky is turning it into an Olympic sport!
shanni and kingsley
ahh.. if there's a fly.. kingsley can and will catch it and eat it. Â i figured his obession with flies stem from his stay from the shelter. Â think that it was the only kind of entertainment he had during his stay in the kennel. Â it's amazing how fast and accurate he is at catching them. Â Â eeeks me the first few times.. luckily we don't have that much flies around here. sandra s.
Kyla is fascinated by them. Aren't those huge radar ears a hoot when they point forward as much as they can without falling off? ...But if I catch the fly and show it to her, she's scared of going near it because it buzzes. Â Electric fly zappers, that's cool ...we still crudely swat them.
Lunar
Our two don't really.... I haven't seen them do it at least. My brother's rotti mix, however, is OBSESSED with chasing and killing moths. You yell "MOTH!" in that house and you get run over by the dog. Â We had ants here once. I tried to get the dogs to take care of a stray ant or two when I found them sauntering across our floor... both dogs would stand there staring at it and follow it across the floor. Whole lotta help they were!
PSmitty
I have a cat who is most excellent at fly catching! Dogs, not so much.
sharkie
how would you associate a command with fly catching? do i need to catch it and show it to my dog, then say the word?
DebC
I don't know how you would teach it. Bocephus goes absolutely nuts over flies. He will spot one bouncing around on the ceiling before I do. He will whine and bark at it, trying to climb/jump up to it!! When we grab the fly swatter, look out!! Of course after we swat it, he must eat it. You would think those little suckers are made of doggie ambrosia, the way he acts! I can hardly wait with the warmer weather, our farmhouse has cluster flies - ugh. He won't know which way to go!
Anda
how would you associate a command with fly catching? do i need to catch it and show it to my dog, then say the word? Â Â Noooo No need for you to catch it! Just point it to the dog, and let/encourage them catch it, while saying the command "Get the fly" or "Fly" something like that. Ouzo goes bezerk if I simply say "Buzzzz!" If you rely on you catching the fly, the poor dog might have to wait a while till he sees what you mean
Maralynn
Missy will sit bolt upright from a sound sleep at the buzz of a fly. She snaps at and catches them - usually when they get up against a window trying to get back outside.
Carson Crazies
Bree and Ginger are *excellent* fly catchers. They can catch them in mid ear and eat them before you can say boo. Bree, however, likes to catch other bugs (moths, flying beetle looking things, crickets, grasshoppers, praying mantises , and so on. She catches them, and brings them in the house very carefully so as to prolong their little lives. She spits them out and then proceeds to pounce on them, mouth them, etc., for what must be an eternity for the poor insects. Makes me shudder every time. Oh, and bees are off limits, for obvious reasons.
iluvlucy
lucy lou chases lizards. its her favorite passtime out in the yard. lady seems to prefer wasps. i thought she would stop once she got stung, but noooo, just seems to make her more determined. but they will go for anything that flies. sharkie
wow didn't realize so many like catching flybugs. Â what's this? Â Â is it possible to make this into a dog activity/sport? some highly erratic flying thing in a closed arena with several dogs chasing it. it'll be the ultimate test of eyesight, patience, speed and agility! lance
I'm not a Border Collie, but the topic made me flash back to when I was in the 2nd grade. One morning I woke up to find two dead flies in my mouth. For a year I had a bad spitting habit. I could never get the memory out of my mind completely for for at least one year. WyoBC
Well Black Jack loves to try to catch flys too. It's so funny when I'm watching tv and it makes a buzzing sound he jumps towards the tv and puts his nose right next to the speaker trying to figure out where the fly is. It's fun to watch those little radar ears look for them when he hears one.
haleigh
ugghhhh, Joy is a spider/moth/pincher bug/fly catching extraordinaire! And frankly, I find it quite appaling when she gives me kisses
kcdawg
With Casey i say "get the fly" or "a flies on your nose", hes pretty good at getting them. But mostly around here its the boxelder beetles (red and black flying things) and the june bugs will be out soon. The june bugs smack themselves into the door and the dogs try to get them even though there is a screen between them They play with the bugs until the bugs are totally disabled. Usually i end up picking up the bodies unless the cat is hungry!
